Exclusive Interview with ABODE's Ellie Cocks

Interview | 19.12.2016

Since her introduction, Ellie Cocks, an exciting young talent, has been successfully gaining applause for her classy performances and neat production skills. This year, saw Ellie feature on some of the finest line ups Ibiza had to offer.

Currently, Ellie forms part of the residency team at top London party ABODE which has been delivering high end parties throughout the summer months. This summer, ABODE took their elegance and philosophy to Sankey’s which provided yet another platform for Ellie to showcase her talents.

UpFrontBeats caught up with Ellie, where we discussed her summer season and plans for 2017.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you first got into DJing’ How has your musical journey effected the way you present your sound’

I first learnt how to mix on vinyl in late 2012, then my mum & dad brought me some CDJS for my birthday (which I didn’t know how to use) then 6 weeks after having them, I got my first gig and I’ve been playing out ever since! My musical journey has definitely affected my present sound as I believe you will always get inspired along the way by the places you go & the people who you listen to!

Are you able to think of three words which best describe your sound’

Groovy tech beats

You’ve been a resident at ABODE for sometime now, and the night has become a staple fixture in the London calendar, but why do you think the night has been so successful’

I think ABODE has become so successful as it started of as a Sunday day party which we didn’t have much of in London and it was a different party to the others. It had a different vibe which I think stood out from the rest; allowing it to gain such a big following! I think as a team ‘ we have made it the party it is today!

Congratulations, on your successful EP, ‘Taking Over’, with Max Chapman, but how did the collaboration come about’ Can we see any more collaborations in the future’ Any artists you would love to do a collaboration with and why’

Thank you! We actually done really well with the Taking Over EP as it reached number 20 in the Tech release chart which was amazing for me as it was my first ever EP! I met Max through playing at the same gigs as him, got chatting, became friends and from that we decided to get in the studio together which I’m forever grateful for, as he is someone I look up to in the Industry and now class as a good friend! I’m pretty sure I will be doing more collaborations in the future!

Your schedule was extremely busy throughout the summer, with gigs at Sankeys, Amnesia, Space & Studio338, but can you tell us your thoughts on which DJs/Tracks caused the most damage this summer’

Yeah summer just gone was the craziest summer I have ever had! I still look back now and can’t believe I’ve played at some of these clubs! I would have to say that Ronnie Spiteri ‘ Relations (Cera Alba Remix) used to go off in Sankeys and Digitaline ‘ Africa!

It must have been a real honor playing at Space on its final year, but can you share any particular memories you have of the club’

I would have to say that my favorite memory of Space has to be when I had the honour of hosting the Sunset Terrace as I never would have dreamed of that! Elrow was sick too! The production was next level.

It was ABODE’s debut Ibiza residency over at Sankeys Ibiza this year, how would you summarise the Ibiza season’ Any highlights’

The opening party still has to be one of the best sets I’ve ever played & when I closed the basement with Africa ‘ that was pretty special! Every party was amazing and got better and better each week and playing at Sankeys every week was a real honour!

The underground music industry is dominated by men, but as a female artist do you feel women are getting the recognition they deserve’ Any ladies doing the business for you at the moment’

To be honest, I don’t get the whole male & female thing and its definitely not something I focus on! I think it should be irrelevant. If you’re a good DJ, you’re a good DJ irrelevant if you boy or girl. However, if I had to choose a female DJ that does it for me, It will have to be Bella Sarris!

As the 2016 draws to a close, can you share with us some of your favourite tracks which have keeping dance floors busy this year’ Any artists which should be looking out for in 2017′

As I said earlier, Ronnie Spiteri ‘ Relations (Cera Alba Remix), I used to love playing Roberto Surace ‘ Circle In The Jungle to. This question is always a hard one as there’s too many to choose from! I would say, in terms of production, George Smeddles in the guy to look out for in 2017. His beats are off the hook!

2016, has been a fantastic year for you, but what do you hope to achieve in 2017′ Can we be hearing more of the same’ Any exclusives’

Thank you. I have some EPs that are waiting to be released which is exciting so I’m just hoping to continue to make more and more progress and one of my aims is to do a European tour ‘ I would absolutely love that!
