Miraclis
- Scienter
Secret Teachings | 15.07.2022
Fresh from the success of his first Secret Teachings single, Trapped, Chilean talent Miraclis will make a welcome return to the imprint with his next offering Scienter. It acts as the second single to precede his forthcoming July album, Origin Of Truth, and includes a remix by well-loved musical pairing Smagghe + Cross.
Miraclis spoke on how the track came together, discussing the narrative behind it and how each musical element shaped the overall sound: ‘Scienter is a track that means a lot to me. I didn’t have any intention or any story to tell at the beginning – I just wanted to do something really cinematographic, where you could imagine yourself in a “dramatic” or ‘painful’ situation. A pad gave the track this certain atmosphere, to which I added the vocals. It’s one of my favourite tracks of the album I must say.”
Smagghe + Cross’ remix comes first, opening with hauntingly-beautiful howls and transcendent vocal tones. Hardened percussion is gradually brought in to create a wonderful juxtaposition before the track unfurls into an ambient, subtly-changing piece. The original then brings things to a close, with Scienter manifesting as an instrument-based, electronic-inspired cut. It builds slowly, reaching a crescendo midway through via an enrapturing guitar riff that showcases the full musical dexterity of the artist known as Max Clementi AKA Miraclis.
Miraclis earned his stripes as a DJ under the name Max Clementi in his native Chile, as well as Spain after a stint at the Barcelona SAE Institute. Playing and writing music since his parents gave him his first guitar at age twelve, he found himself inspired by synth wave, electronic pop, trip hop, and psychedelic rock of the ’80s and ’90s, drenching himself in music by the likes of Massive Attack, Tricky, Depeche Mode, and Nine Inch Nails. However, it wasn’t until he had to move back to Pucón to take care of his father during the pandemic that he began working on what would become Origin Of Truth in earnest.
Santiago Posada is a film, documentary and commercials director. Clients include; TATE, V&A Museum, Second Home, Mr Porter, Discovery, Sony and more. The music video for Scienter is three years in the making and inspired by an ancient tradition from the 1700’s in Columbia. Horsemen have been gathering every year, dressed up in self-made costumes, to celebrate an equestrian spectacle, representing the battles between indigenous people, Africans, Moors and Spaniards in the 18th century.
