New music from Benoit & Sergio is always a very special notch on Culprit’s calendar. When it happens to be their first release since a pair of EPs for Soul Clap Records and Leftroom in late 2015, the excitement and anticipation is nearly off the charts. ‘You Eat You Want’ renews the Los Angeles-based label’s love affair with the inimitable duo, this being their third prized jewel of an EP in Culprit’s catalogue.

Benoit & Sergio’s music is defined by their sense of fun, conceptual approach and eclectic references. ‘You Eat You Want’ is no exception. ‘Daft Punk meets DFA meets Talking Heads made by kids raised on Old School House and Disco’ only begins to explain the duo’s approach to dance music. Existing far beyond the strict confines of club funcionality, Benoit & Sergio bring a vivid sense of storytelling and tongue-in-cheek humor to their releases, all the while showing inspired craftsmanship and freewheeling spirit.

‘You Eat You Want’ is a showcase for all these qualities: ‘The Way You Get’ is as summer anthem-ready as any tune in Benoit & Sergio’s enviable collection, with a glorious gospel (!) vocal line adding a typically unexpected touch to an enormously catchy groove. ‘You Eat, You Want’ is the classic funk motif ‘ slap bass and all – sitting on top of a sleazy strut of a low-slung groove. ‘Different Place’ picks up the pace, aiming straight for the nighttime dancefloor. Thick bassline, acid touches, robotic vocal bits and sustained sense of tension will turn even the most jaded dancers into rolling dervishes.
